What interceptor cleaning covers
An interceptor separates oil, fuel and silt from surface water before it reaches
the drainage system. It only works while there is space in it. We arrange scheduled
and reactive interceptor cleaning: emptying and washing out the chambers, removing
the sludge and hydrocarbon layer, checking the coalescers and the automatic closure
device, and reporting on the condition of the unit.
The waste removed is classified and consigned in the same operation, so a clean
is a single documented job rather than a clean followed by a disposal problem.
Who it is for
Fuel forecourts and filling stations. Transport yards, depots and vehicle
workshops. Car parks and hardstanding draining to a separator. Manufacturing sites
with external storage or loading areas. In practice, anywhere with a full retention
or bypass separator on the drainage plan — and a surprising number of sites
have one that nobody has serviced since it was installed.
How a project runs
For a scheduled programme we survey the units, set a frequency based on how
quickly they actually load rather than on a default interval, and put a service
calendar in place. Six-monthly is the common baseline; a busy forecourt or a yard
that takes a lot of silt will need more.
For a reactive call — an alarm, a blockage, a visible sheen, or an
inspection that has gone badly — we arrange attendance and deal with the
immediate problem first, then report on why it happened.
Each visit produces a written service report: what was removed, the condition of
the chambers, filters and closure device, and anything that needs attention before
the next clean.
Compliance and why it matters
A separator that overflows discharges hydrocarbons into surface water, and a
pollution incident is dealt with far more seriously than an overdue service. The
Environment Agency's guidance is explicit that separators must be maintained and
that maintenance must be recorded; the record is what turns "we service it" into
something you can produce.
Interceptor sludge is normally hazardous waste. It is consigned under a hazardous
waste consignment note through a registered carrier to a permitted facility, and the
documentation comes back to you with the service report so both live in the same
file.
What a service visit actually involves
The chambers are emptied of the accumulated silt, water and hydrocarbon layer.
The walls, baffles and inlet are washed down so the next inspection is of the unit
rather than of the deposit on it. Coalescing filters are removed, cleaned or
replaced depending on condition. The automatic closure device — the float that
is supposed to seal the outlet when the oil layer reaches its limit — is
tested rather than looked at, because a seized float is the commonest reason a
separator that appears serviced still discharges.
The unit is then refilled with clean water to its working level, which matters:
a separator returned empty will pass its first flush of contaminated water straight
through.
Records, and why they are the deliverable
You are expected to be able to demonstrate that your separator is maintained, not
merely to have maintained it. The service report we return records the date, the
volume removed, the condition of each component, the consignment note reference for
the waste, and any recommendation arising — a damaged baffle, a cracked
chamber, a filter approaching the end of its life.
Kept together, those reports are what turns an inspection from a conversation
into a formality, and they are what tells you whether your service interval is right
before an overflow tells you it was not.
