Household Van Collection of Waste | AES
Van collection is when a van and a crew come to your home, load the waste you point at and take it away, with the price based on how much space the load fills. It suits households who have a specific pile to get rid of and want it gone the same or the next day, without a skip sitting on the drive.
A van collection is the simplest way to get rid of a specific load of household waste. You show the crew what needs to go, they do the lifting, and the load leaves on the day. There is nothing to hire, nothing taking up your drive and no council permit to arrange.
Who a van collection suits
It works best when you already know what you want gone and you want it gone quickly. Common household jobs include:
- A garage, shed or loft emptied in a single visit
- Old furniture, a bed frame, a wardrobe or a mattress
- Garden waste after a weekend of cutting back
- Rubble, tiles or an old bathroom suite after a small DIY job
- Bagged clutter and boxes left over from a move
- A fridge, freezer, washing machine or television
If you need one room, a garden or a garage dealt with rather than a whole property, this is the service to ask for. It is also the practical choice when there is simply nowhere to put a skip, for example on a terraced street or a shared drive.
How a van collection is priced
Van collection is priced by volume: how much space your load takes up in the van, usually described in cubic yards or as a fraction of the van. That price covers the labour, the transport and the disposal, so the carrying and loading are included. A few items cost more because the law requires them to be handled separately, and mattresses, fridges and electrical goods are the usual examples. Heavy materials such as soil and rubble are charged differently again because of their weight. We confirm what applies before you commit, so the figure you agree is the figure you pay.
Would a skip suit you better?
A van collection is for a load that already exists and needs to be gone now. If you are filling it gradually over days, a skip may suit better, because you can keep adding to it at your own pace.
How we arrange your collection
Absolute Environmental Solutions is a registered waste broker and dealer with the Environment Agency, registration CBDU309472. We arrange a licensed, vetted local contractor for your collection and manage the job from your first call through to the paperwork afterwards. Think of us as the people who choose and oversee the contractor rather than the people who drive the van. We have worked this way for industrial clients since 2019.
- Tell us what needs to go, with a photo if that is easier
- We size the load, price it by volume and confirm the cost in writing
- We book a vetted, licensed contractor for a same or next day slot where one is available
- The crew loads the waste and takes it to a permitted facility
- We send you your waste transfer documentation
Why doing it properly protects you
In the UK, you have a legal duty of care for your own household waste. In plain terms, you are expected to check that whoever takes it away is licensed to do so. If an unlicensed collector dumps your waste down a country lane, the paperwork inside those bags leads back to your address, and it is the householder who can be prosecuted for not checking. It is easy to settle: anyone can search the Environment Agency public register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers. Every contractor we use is on that register, and we keep your transfer documentation on file so you are never the one left explaining.
What happens to your load
Your waste goes to a licensed transfer station, not straight to landfill. There it is sorted so that wood, metal, cardboard, plastics and electrical goods can be separated and sent for recycling, with only the genuine leftovers going for energy recovery or disposal. Some items have their own route by law. Fridges and freezers must be handled at a specialist facility because of the gases in the cooling system and the insulation foam. Upholstered seating such as sofas and padded chairs must be kept apart from the rest of the load and incinerated, because of the flame retardants in the foam and fabric.
What cannot travel in a general van load
Asbestos must never go in a general load. If you think a garage roof, old guttering or a shed panel contains it, stop and tell us, and we will arrange the correct licensed route separately. The same applies to gas bottles, paint and chemicals, car batteries, tyres and clinical waste. Tell us what you have and we will organise the right route for each part.

Van Collection — common questions
In most cases we can arrange a contractor for the same day or the next working day, depending on the slots available locally. Morning enquiries have the best chance of a same day collection. If your load includes something that needs a specialist route, such as a fridge or asbestos, that part may take a little longer to organise properly.
No. The crew will carry items from wherever they are, including upstairs, a back garden or a loft hatch, as long as it is safe to do so. It helps to clear a path and to point out anything heavy or awkward when you book, so the right number of people turn up.
Pricing is by volume, so send a photo or describe it in rough terms, such as “about ten bin bags and a sofa”. We will size it for you and confirm the price in writing before the van is booked. Mattresses, fridges, electrical items and heavy rubble are priced differently because they must be disposed of separately by law.
They solve different problems. A van is better when the load already exists, you want it gone quickly or you have nowhere to put a skip. A skip is better when you are working through a project over several days and want somewhere to throw things as you go.
Ask for the waste carrier registration and check it on the Environment Agency public register, which is free to search. Every contractor we arrange is registered and vetted before we use them, and you get the waste transfer documentation for your own records. That paperwork is what protects you if your waste is ever found somewhere it should not be.
If something is in genuinely good condition, tell us before the collection and we can look at a reuse or charity route instead. Once an item has been put out as waste it has to follow the disposal rules, and that is especially true of sofas and padded chairs, which cannot be recycled or resold once they are waste.
