What commercial skip hire covers

Commercial skip hire puts a waste container on your site for the duration of a job and takes it away, full, for compliant disposal. We arrange the whole thing — sizing the skip to the work, delivery and exchange, any permit required, and the disposal and paperwork when it is collected. We are a registered waste broker and dealer, so we source skip hire through vetted, licensed providers and manage it on your behalf; we do not deliver, collect or operate the skips ourselves.

Skip hire suits work that generates a steady flow of waste in one place over days or weeks — a refit, a clearance, a construction or maintenance project — where a container on site is more practical than repeated collections. Skip sizes and types

Skips run from small builders' skips of around 2 to 4 cubic yards, through 6 and 8-yard skips for general construction and clearance waste, up to larger 12 to 14-yard skips for bulky but light material. For high volumes a roll-on roll-off (RoRo) container of 20 to 40 cubic yards is the efficient choice, and is what most industrial sites and large clearances use. We match the size and type to the waste and to the space you have, because a skip that is too small means extra exchanges and one that is too large is paid-for air.

Permits for a skip on the public highway

A skip standing on your own land needs no permit. A skip placed on a public road, verge or footway does — it is issued by the local council, usually runs for a fixed period, and comes with conditions on lighting, markings and safety. Where your skip has to go on the highway, we arrange the permit as part of the hire so the skip is placed lawfully rather than left to become your problem.

What can and cannot go in a skip

General construction, clearance and commercial waste is fine — timber, rubble, metal, plastics, packaging and most bulky waste. What cannot go in a mixed skip is hazardous or specially controlled material: asbestos, chemicals, oils, batteries, gas cylinders, fluorescent tubes, paints, electrical items (WEEE), tyres and clinical waste all have separate legal routes. Putting any of them in a general skip contaminates the whole load, and it will be charged at a higher rate or rejected. Compliance and documentation

When the skip is collected, the waste is taken by a registered carrier to a permitted facility, and you receive the waste transfer note — or a consignment note where any hazardous waste was involved — with the carrier's registration and the receiving site's permit reference. Your duty of care applies to a skip exactly as it does to any other waste: you remain responsible as the producer for describing the waste correctly and for it reaching an authorised destination, and the paperwork we return is what evidences that.

What it costs, and what drives it

Skip hire is priced on the size of the skip, how long you keep it, the type of waste, and whether a highway permit is needed. Weight matters as much as volume — a skip of rubble reaches its weight limit long before it is full — so heavy waste is often better in a smaller skip or a dedicated container. We size the hire to the job and tell you the full cost, permit included, before it is booked.
